AUCHI, EDO STATE — A shocking security breach has rocked the Auchi community in Edo State. Specifically, a local logistics runner for a kidnapping syndicate confessed after a suspicious shopping trip. This confession eventually led to a deadly confrontation at the home of a Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) commander.
The Cigarette Trail to the Bush
The drama began when a young man purchased an unusual amount of cigarettes and sweets at a local shop. Consequently, vigilant residents intercepted him. They questioned his motives for carrying such heavy supplies. Initially, the suspect claimed the items were for personal use. However, after intense questioning by the “area” boys, he broke down. He admitted he was delivering the supplies to kidnappers hiding in the nearby bush.
Shocking “Homegrown” Crime Discovery
The suspect’s full confession revealed a terrifying truth. He stated that none of the kidnappers were outsiders or “Fulani” herdsmen. Instead, he claimed the entire squad consisted of local community members. Furthermore, he identified their primary leader as a prominent member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN). This commander reportedly managed the operations from his home rather than the forest.

The Deadly Confrontation and Betrayal
Following this revelation, soldiers and local residents escorted the informant to the VGN leader’s compound. The commander immediately realized he had been compromised. In a desperate move to silence the witness, the VGN leader grabbed a Pump-Action (PA) rifle. He shot his own squad member in the abdomen at close range.
The blast was horrific. Specifically, the victim’s intestines were dislodged by the force of the shot. Nevertheless, the commander’s attempt to escape failed. Soldiers on the scene acted instantly. They neutralized the VGN leader as he tried to flee the compound.
Community Audit: Trust Broken
This incident has left Auchi residents in a state of deep mourning and suspicion. It highlights a massive failure in local security vetting. When those hired to protect the community are the ones leading the kidnapping squads, the safety “audit” is broken. Therefore, residents are now calling for a total overhaul of local vigilante groups to weed out criminal elements.
