WARRI — Troops of the 63 Brigade under Operation Delta Safe have arrested two suspects and seized weapons, including four AK-47 rifles, during a raid in Delta State, the Nigerian Army said on Tuesday.
The operation took place in Ogidigben community in Warri South-West Local Government Area following reports of sporadic gunfire, according to a statement signed by Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the brigade.
The Army said troops acted on credible intelligence and moved swiftly to secure the area, leading to the recovery of multiple weapons and related items.
“The operation was conducted following reports of sporadic shooting in the community,” the statement said.
Items seized during the raid included:
- Four AK-47 rifles
- Six magazines
- 106 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition
- Two knives
- Ten machetes
- Four pairs of rain boots
The suspects are currently in military custody and undergoing further investigation.
The Commander of the 63 Brigade, Moronfolu Abdulmoshood Shonibare, commended the troops for their swift response and urged them to maintain operational momentum.
He reiterated the military’s commitment to curbing criminal activity in the region.
“The brigade remains committed to denying criminal elements freedom of action, he said, warning individuals involved in illegal arms possession to desist or face arrest.”
The operation highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of the Niger Delta, where armed groups, illegal bunkering activities and communal tensions have persisted.
Operation Delta Safe, a joint military task force, has been leading efforts to combat militancy, oil theft and violent crime across the region.
Security analysts say continued intelligence-led operations will be critical in addressing the proliferation of illegal arms and restoring stability in affected communities.
