Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and New Nigeria Peoples Party 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, were among prominent Nigerians who gathered in Abeokuta on Thursday to honour former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday.

In separate posts on X, both opposition figures shared photos from the celebration and paid tributes to the elder statesman.
Obi described Obasanjo as a towering statesman whose influence continues to shape national discourse.
“Today, 5 March 2026, I joined other Nigerians in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to celebrate the birthday of His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, two-time former President of Nigeria,” the ex-Anambra State Governor wrote.
He added that Obasanjo remained an exceptional leader whose voice continued to resonate in the nation’s affairs.

“Chief Obasanjo remains a towering statesman, an exceptional leader of our time whose voice continues to resonate in the affairs of our nation.
“I admire his steadfastness, courage, and deep sense of justice and patriotism. Over the years, he has stood as a strong advocate for national unity and a fearless critic of bad governance, constantly reminding leaders that Nigeria must rise above divisions and work together for the common good. His moral sense of right and wrong has made him the conscience of the nation.

“May God continue to bless him with good health, wisdom, and many more years of service to Nigeria and humanity,” Obi said.
Similarly, Kwankwaso said he joined other distinguished Nigerians in Abeokuta to honour the former president.

He described Obasanjo as a revered global statesman.
“Today in Abeokuta, I joined distinguished compatriots to celebrate the 89th birthday of His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR — a revered global statesman.

“May God continue to bless him with robust health, profound wisdom, and many more fruitful years,” he said.
Obasanjo, born March 5, 1937, served as Nigeria’s military Head of State between 1976 and 1979 and later as a democratically elected president from 1999 to 2007.
